Whiteboard registration

I recently had an interactive whiteboard fitted into my reception classroom. The children are fascinated by it. Each child uses it to self-register every day. I put their names on one side and, on the other, a column headed “I am here”. When they arrive, they take off their coats and go straight to the whiteboard to drag their name from one column to the other. I can then quickly record the absences and we can start the day’s activities.

Some need help with their name-writing, so sometimes I leave off parts of names and they need to complete them using the pencil tool. They seem to prefer writing on the “big board” rather than on paper and they like knowing they are writing their names for a useful purpose.
