Victoria Musgrave, headteacher of Blenheim high, a foundation school in Surrey that was Britain’s first purpose-built grant-maintained school, is to become principal of Wymondham College in Norfolk in September. Wymondham a mixed, 11 to 18 comprehensive with more than 900 pupils, is the biggest state boarding school in Britain. Her successor at Blenheim will be Teresa Leech, currently deputy head of Howard of Effingham school, Surrey.
Barbara Fletcher has joined the National Children’s Bureau to head the charity’s new pupil inclusion unit. She comes from the Local Government Association, where she was educational policy officer, and before that she was education programme director of the Who Cares? Trust.
The new head of education
support services for the City of
Liverpool is
Barbara Hughes. Her appointment completes the four-strong management team, led by education director Colin Hilton, charged with acting on the highly
critical Office for Standards in Education report on the city’s education service. Before moving to Liverpool, Ms Hughes was education services manager at Dundee.
Howard Freed has become headteacher of Nower Hill school, a mixed 12 to 16 comprehensive in Harrow, north London. He was previously head of Leytonstone school in north-east London and before that taught in Ealing and Enfield.
Peter Clrk, headteacher of
Rastrick high school, near Halifax,
West Yorkshire, will join the
Department for Education and
Employment’s standards and
effectiveness unit as an advisor at Easter. Mr Clark, who hit the
headlines in 1996 when he became temporary head of the Ridings school in Halifax during its
well-publicised crisis, is taking up a
three-year secondment and is
expected to work mainly in local authority support. He will resign
his position as headteacher
of Rastrick.
Mark Lees (right) has been appointed headteacher of Alverton community primary school, Penzance, Cornwall. Mr Lees was previously headteacher of Trenance infants school, Newquay and has, for several years, worked as primary adviser for early years in the Cornwall Education Advisory Service
Ruth Borthwick has been appointed head of literature and talks for London’s South Bank, based at the Royal Festival Hall, where she will be responsible for organising the UK’s leading programme of year-round literature events and overseeing the Poetry Library. She comes from Spread the Word, the innovativeliterature development agency which she co-founded.
Her predecessor Antonia Byatt is leaving to take up the position of director of the new Fawcett Library, the National Library of Women, at London Guildhall University.
