Beryl Gilroy, the first British-Guyanese woman appointed as a teacher in London and the first person to write culture-based school texts about Caribbean life, was this week made an honorary fellow of London University’s Institute of Education. Formerly principal of Beckford chool in the London borough of Camden, she became a lecturer, writer and cross-cultural psychologist.
Donald Woods, former editor of the Daily Dispatch in South Africa, arrested for blaming the South African government for Steve Biko’s death, was also awarded an honorary fellowship by the Institute of Education.
David Radomsky has been appointed headteacher of Hasmonean High, a Jewish aided school in north London. Rabbi Radomsky is now first deputy head of Immanuel College in Bushey. Born and educated in South Africa, he studied education, psychology and sociology, first at the University of South Africa and then in Israel, before teaching in Israel for three years. From 1985 to 1988 he was the communal rabbi of Dublin and Wembley United Synagogues.
