SUSAN Thomas has been appointed director of

corporate services and

development in the

Department for Education and Employment and a member of the board. Ms Thomas is formerly director of personnel and administration at Lewisham Borough Council and a member of the Warner Committee, which looked at child protection issues on behalf of the Department of Health.

Neath Port Talbot has appointed Karl Napieralla as its new corporate director of education, leisure and lifelong learning. Mr Napieralla is a native of the Afan Valley but has taught at schools in Essex. He is a former headteacher of Cwrt Sart, Briton Ferry, and assistant director of education with Neath Port Talbot Council.

The Teacher Training Agency has appointed David Kershaw, Victoria Nye and professors Eileen Baker and Barbara MacGilchrist as new board members while Clive Booth was re-appointed chairman. They will serve for three years and replace Paul Ennals,

Professor John Gray, John Steele and Patricia Pritchard.

David Nelson, current chief executie of Leicestershire Training and Enterprise Council, is joining the county’s Learning and Skills Council as executive director. He will be responsible for leading local LSC teams who will plan and fund all school sixth forms, colleges and training. Learning and Skills Councils will replace the Further

Education Funding Council and the training and enterprise councils.

Hugh Munro, former head of Clifton School, Bristol and Worksop College, Nottinghamshire, has been appointed Master of Wellington College. Mr Munro, who is a Cambridge graduate and has been involved in education for 26 years including teaching stints in America and Scotland, replaces Jonty Driver who retired at the end of the summer term.

Rev Canon Edward Turner, former diocesan director of education for Rochester, has been appointed Canon Emeritus of Rochester Cathedral, consultant to the Bishop of Rochester on public affairs and consultant to the Rochester 2000 Trust. Canon Turner, 63, was ordained in 1966 and became Chaplain of Tonbridge School in 1969.
