Barbara Hughes is to be the next director of education for South Tyneside council. Ms Hughes, now assistant executive director at Liverpool City Council, started teaching in 1976 before moving into advisory work and then into educational administration. She was part of the team that turned around Liverpool education authority after its poor inspection report.
Dudley council in the West Midlands has appointed Richard Stiff as assistant director of education. Mr Stiff was formerly senior education officer for pupil services at Suffolk County Council.
Simon Jenkin is joining the board of Cambridge Education Associates (CEA) as a non-executive director. Since leaving the post of chief education officer of Devon in 1998, Mr Jenkin has been interim director of Calderdale and Islington education authorities. David Yorath, currently a deputy director in Bristol education authority, is joining CEA in July as a principal consultant responsible for its service in the West Country.
The children’s charity NCH has appointed new heads to two of its five special schools. Richard Aird joins Penshurst school in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, a residential school for children with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Mr Aird was previously head of Baginton Fields school in Coventry. David Haswell is the new head ofHeadlands, a residential school in Penarth, Wales, for children with emotional and behavioural difficulties. He joined Headlands 12 years ago as a supply teacher.

TREVOR JAMESON is to be the new principal of Hull College when the current principal, LESLEY AGAR, leaves in September. Mr Jameson, currently the deputy chief executive, had a career in business and finance before joining the college in 1998.
The Audit Commission has made four new appointments to its local education authority inspection team. They are: BOB WALDING, formerly head of performance improvement with Surrey County Council; TIM PRIESTLEY, formerly assistant director of education services for North East Lincolnshire council; KATHY TURNER, who was an area education officer with Shropshire County Council, and NICK FLIGHT, who joins from Hartlepool Borough Council, where he was assistant director of education.
CHRISTOPHER CLEUGH is to be the next headmaster of St Benedict’s, the Roman Catholic independent school in Ealing, west London. Mr Cleugh, who has been head of St Anselm’s college, Birkenhead, since 1993, will replace Dr ANTHONY DACHS, who is retiring in December after 14 years.
