GARETH Jones is to chair the education and lifelong learning committee of the Welsh Assembly. Mr Jones, Plaid Cymru Assembly member for Conwy and former head of a large Llandudno comprehensive, succeeds Cynog Dafis.

VINCENT McDonnell, director of schools’ services in Islington for Cambridge Education Associates, is to join the company’s main board as operations director. His post will be taken by Bill Clark, Chief Inspector and head of the quality, standards and audit division in the Inspectorate in Scotland.

GARRY Hawkes has been appointed chair of the Basic Skills Agency, a key partner in the Government’s strategy to improve adult literacy and numeracy. He succeeds Lord Moser. Formerly chief executive of Gardner Merchant, Europe’s largest contract caterer, Mr Hawkes is currently chair of examining board Edexcel and of the National Training Organisation’s national council, and a director of Investors in People.
