Heather Rabbatts, chief executive of the London borough of Lambeth, has been appointed a non-executive director on the DFEE’s board. The board charts the department’s strategic direction, develops policy priorities, gives guidance and monitors the department’s working. Ms Rabbatts is also governor of the London School of Economics and the BBC.
Elgar Howarth is to become artistic director of the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain when Roy Newsome, the present music director, retires at the end of 2000 after 17 years. Mr Howarth, formerly a trumpet-player with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, is now a freelance conductor.
David Sulkin, a freelance opera and theatre director and arts education specialist, has been appointed head of policy and operations at the National Foundation of Youth Music. Mr Sulkin was the co-founder of the Baylis programme at the English National Opera.
Andy Schofield has been appointed headteacher of Varndean secondary school in Brighton. Mr Schofield is deputy at the school and played a key role in its successful bid for technology college status. He has taught in Hastings, Plymouth and Southend and is now a regular TES contributor.
