The British Humanist Association has appointed its first education officer. She is Marilyn Mason, formerly teacher of English, general studies and philosophy and head of sixth form at Surbiton High School.
Angela Browning (right), Conservative MP for Tiverton and Honiton and a former spokesman on education and disability, has been appointed president of the Institute of Home Economics.Mrs Browning, who was a junior minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food in thelast government, is aformer teacher of home economics.
David Tate is to be the first chairman of Reading is Fundamental, UK, a non-profit-making organisation set up to inspire children and young people to become strong, motivated readers. Mr Tate is Master of the Mercers Company and a former director of corporate affairs with Tate amp; Lyle, which supports RIF.
Jo Holroyd is to be assistant chief executive of NCFE, the national awarding body for further education. Mrs Holroyd will join the Newcastle-based body from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in London, where she was development manager.
The former Northern Council for Further Education was reconstituted as the national body NCFE at the start of the decade. It specialises in vocational qualifications, particularly at the pre-NVQ stage.
