I am baffled by the stark contrast from one week to another in the way that our profession is presented. Back in the summer, we heard of heads working throughout the holiday restructuring their staff. Yet in TES, December 2, we learnt that women are excluded from the “golf with boss” culture.
When do these heads find the time to play golf with their staff?
I find all of this astonishing. We like to think that when we recruit and promote staff it is on the basis of their application, references and the assessment centre we create.
Did the people interviewed for the London Metropolitan university’s survey find our process so unusual? Perhaps it isn’t. Perhaps the issues for women lie elsewhere?
