DFEE School Business Initiatives Unit: wants to encourage more businesses to get involved at a national and local level, to identify and spread best practice and to facilitate school business partnerships. It appreciates the National Consumer Council and the Consumers’ Association’s concerns about commercialism in the classroom and is keen to ensure that young people are not exploited. But the best people to decide the appropriateness of such links are teachers and school governors.
The National Year of Reading and the Maths Year 2000: are good examples of government and business working together on key strategies. The Maths Year 2000 initiative starts in January 2000.
Business: supports schools in many ways, not just financially, but through activities such as Education Action Zones, reading volunteers, pupil mentoring, work-experience placements and teacher placements.
