The SSTA shindig at Peebles had its usual memorable moments, some of which can be reported in a responsible journal. One was the appearance of a guide for new teachers, which is a rattling good read.
We especially commend the bouncy glossary. An adviser isdescribed as “a rare species; sub-species, subject adviser, is now almost extinct”. An assistant head is “commanded from above and often vilified from below”. God, we learn, is Douglas Osler, senior chief inspector, while a jannie is “a lesser God”.
