Sean Lang’s review of Channel 4‘s History in Action; The Wild West (TES, September 13) makes fascinating reading. However, his comment, “These are long programmes, and they make few concessions to a mass audience, let alone a young one” needs challenging.

Teachers do not show programmes in their entirety but select the relevant sections according to the topic chosen and the ability of the class.

What needs to be celebrated is that for little cost, history departments are provided with more than five hours of invaluable visual source material.
