To become a teacher, I had to complete a degree and meet a host of standards in my NQT year. To remain, I undergo a minimum of three, usually six, in-house observations per year; annual performance management; continuing professional development; and registration with the General Teaching Council. Failure in any means I can’t teach any more. Oh, and Ofsted inspectors turn up as and when.

Now I’m going to be expected to take a masters course, not of my choice, and renew my licence to teach every five years.

Why? And how many excellent teachers will leave because they are fed up with the notion that they aren’t good enough?
