Tom Wilson has been appointed as the first principal of the new Glasgow Metropolitan College.

The principal of Glasgow College of Building and Printing, which is to combine with Glasgow College of Food Technology in the first merger in the FE sector since incorporation, beat off competition from the only other contender - Donald Leitch, principal of the College of Food Technology.

Professor Wilson, aged 60, has held his current post since 1989 and is said to have “worked fastidiously to build strong links between education and industry”. He is also chairman of Learning and Teaching Scotland.

The merged college will be officially launched in early February and will have a projected annual turnover running to some pound;22 million and a student enrolment of around 20,000.
