Bill Gates, boss of Microsoft, obviously had his priorities right on a recent flying visit to Britain. He stepped off his transatlantic flight straight on to the golf course for a few rounds of ball-bashing. Not any course, either. Wentworth, home to the great champions.

After 10 holes, he sped into the clubhouse to conduct an interview with Nigel Paine, chief executive of the Scottish Council for Educational Technology, before hurtling off for a chin-wag with Tony Blair and then John Major.
