* There are two new developments in wireless networking afoot. Wireless networks conform to the 802.11 standard (AKAwi-fi). There are three flavours of wi-fi: 802.11b has data speeds of up to 11 Megabits per second (Mbps), while 802.11a and 802.11g both go up to 54Mbps. But, only “g” is backwards compatible, so many manufacturers are dropping their “a” products. Wi-fi manufacturers are now colour-coding products, so you know what you’re buying. Wi-fi security is also being beefed up with a new standard: Wi-fi Protected Access. First products should be out by the end of the year.
