The number of women appointed to senior promoted posts in Edinburgh secondaries has risen steadily over the past two years, according to new figures.

Two of the three appointments since local government reform are women: Wynne Brogan at St Augustine’s High and Marion Docherty at St Thomas of Aquin’s High.

But in the primary sector there is only a marginal change in the balance between men and women teachers.

Between October 1995 and June this year, the percentage of women secondary headteachers in the city rose from 7 per cent to 13 per cent. Three are women, 20 are men. The percentage of deputes has risen from 25 per cent to 31 per cent. Eight are women and 18 men.

At assistant head level, 29 per cent are women, compared with 25 per cent. At principal teacher grade, 38 per cent are women, against 36 per cent previously.

Women are in the majority in guidance, holding 57 per cent of principal teacher posts and 68 per cent of assistant principal posts. The trend is strengthening.

The number of women in senior teacher posts in secondary has fallen from 65 per cent to 44 per cent. The majority of unpromoted classroom teachers are women - 57 per cent - but full-time male teachers marginally outnumber the total of female teachers - 52 per cent to 48 per cent.
