Much of Professor Woodhead’s indictment of our emasculated profession is spot-on. Having lost the ability to be non-conformist and see the big picture, we seem unable to resist the Government’s messianic zeal to degrade knowledge at the expense of relevance. If only the former chief inspector of schools were not chairman of the private school company Cognita, I would believe his concerns were wholly honourable.
