Not many people know this, but July 6 has been designated “Walk a Dog to School Day”, for reasons best known to Battersea Dogs Home, which is organising the fundraiser.
The idea is, of course, to get parents out of their cars and into the walking habit, while showing their dogs a good time.
There is no reason for us to mention any of this, except that it’s a good excuse to retell a joke by the late, great Chic Murray. Strolling along the streets of London (as one does), he was stopped by a passer-by who asked:
“Do you know the Battersea dog’s home?”
To which Chic replied: “I didn’t realise he’d been away.”
