Parminder Bahra’s young-est child goes to St James primary school in Birmingham.

She attends the school, too, along with other Asian mothers who have enrolled on a 10-week Word Power literacy and child development course run by the LEA.

“It’s difficult for Asian women who don’t speak English,” she said. “They don’t go and talk about their children’s problems at school or encourage their children to ask for help. Children get more interested in their schoolwork when their parents show interest.

“Since doing the Word Power course I can help my children with their homework. ”
