In a “word story” detective game, children learn how English has absorbed words from other languages and cultures. They match up coloured word cards with cards containing the “story” of each word derivation, or turn over face-down cards to collect pairs.
Teachers can find many examples of words to use for this sort of activity by looking in an etymological dictionary to find the source of words that are “borrowed” in English from a range of languages.
