An Oban primary pupil will represent Scotland at the World Youth Chess Championships in Greece this month. Eight-year-old Liam Richmond from Rockfield Primary will be the youngest in the squad and will take part in the under-8 category. Although the school chess club is normally open to pupils from P3 onwards, Liam was allowed to join in P2, as he could already play chess. “In his first year in the club, Liam gathered enough points in the British Land Chess Challenge to make the Mega final in Glasgow, where he won the trophy for his age group,” said headteacher Jack Degnan.
