Schools advertising on local radio (TES, August 16) may be a recent phenomenon, but some of our top boarding schools are going to even greater lengths (or distances!).

When conducting a RussianA-level oral examination, I asked one native-speaking candidate how he had come to be a pupil in this particular school in the depths of the English countryside. He replied that he had seen an advertisement for the school on television . . . in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan.
