I sometimes despair of the candy-floss merchants who work in my industry. Do the PR consultants quoted in last week’s issue (“Phew, no PRs at teachers’ Oscars”, TES, March 27) really think that teachers are incapable of dressing well for an awards ceremony? As if the Government’s latest gimmick to boost teacher morale will make any difference anyway.

We all know that a decent pay rise, decent working conditions, schools in good nick, and government ministers and Chris Woodhead getting off the backs of teachers would be the best tonic for morale in the profession.

So come on Lord Puttnam, recommend something with substance that shows the Government takes teaching seriously by giving teachers more than a gold star for effort.
