The debates over bonking bishops is not new. A retired member of the profession (teaching, that is) has reminded us of a remark by the famous Lanarkshire miss, Jane McGowan, who said in the 1960s: “I have taught miners’ children and the offspring of heidies but God preserve us from the parish priests’ weans.”
We are surprised, incidentally, that none of the thousands of words written about Bishop Roddy Wright has mentioned his former membership of the Western Isles’s education committee, on which he represented the Catholic Church during his South Uist period. Wright is remembered as “caring, sociable and energetic”.
