Well-known children’s writers, including David Almond, Joan Lingard, Jacqueline Wilson and the poet Brian Patten, have contributed newly commissioned work to encourage children to write their own autobiographical pieces. Teaching ideas by Angel Scott, lecturer in education at Durham University, and Lorraine Dawes, literacy co-ordinator for the London borough of Redbridge, support the pieces.

Write Away 4 can be used with children aged seven to 14 who are then invited to take part in a competition spnsored by McDonald’s Restaurants Ltd. Prizes include cash, possible publication and a writer’s residency.

If you missed the free booklet for secondary pupils aged 11 to 14 you will find the material on The TES website: www.tes.co.uk or you can contact NATE for further copies, tel: 0114 255 5419. E-mail: natehq@btconnect.com. The primary material, for children aged seven to 10, is in the October issue of TES Primary magazine (in newsagents now) and it can also be found on The TES website.
