FASTER writers get better exam results, a study of pupils at a large comprehensive has shown.

Teachers at Lord William’s, a 1200-pupil 11 to 16 school in Oxfordshire, found that fluent handwriting is associated with good results.

Pupils who achieved higher-than-expected GCSE English grades had better handwriting style than those who underachieved.

The study, funded by the Teacher Training Agency, found that more than 40 per cent of pupils in Year 7 were writing slowly. Boys at that stage wrote slower than girls but by year 11, they were slightly faster.
