To mark the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Richard Woolfenden, an English teacher based in London, has organised a Schools’ Anti-War Writing Competition. Children (aged 13-18) may enter stories, essays and poems expressing “their thoughts and feelings about our war-torn world”. Prizes include a day out in London, book tokens and Japanese writing packs. The judges include Germaine Greer, Adrian Mitchell and John Pilger. The closing date for entries is May 29. For further details or a teachers’ pack (Pounds 3) write to Richard Woolfenden, Tom Hood School, Terling Close, Leytonstone, London E11 3NT.
