With regard to the attempt by the National Association for Gifted Children to borrow Dr Who to improve the image of intelligence (“Time Lord has no time for Britain’s cleverest children”, April 16), there have been a number of such successful linkages previously. When Buffy the Vampire Slayer appeared, a number of commentators applauded the fact that one of the heroes was a librarian. And in the X-Men films and comics, Professor Xavier’s institute for young mutants was disguised as a school for intellectually gifted children. Imprinted on the poster of one of X-Men film was the message “Gifted or Cursed?” - not a bad question when it comes to the failings of the education system with gifted pupils.
