PERHAPS YOUR back page columnist, Sarah Nelson, needs to be a bit less hypocritical in her observations (TESS, January 1). Sure, we all get tired of “Merry Christmas everyone” and have embarrassing photographs of ourselves in seventies gear, but the retrospective trend in today’s youngsters is harmless (tasteless admittedly) and fun.

Doesn’t she remember that? Rather she would wallow in self-pity - I’ve yet to meet a supply teacher in rags - and stir up a more provocative and divisive retrospective in nationalistic solidarity with the Clearances.

What’s the take-home message from her column? Children should be looking forwards not backwards. Practise what you preach.
