THE DIARY has suffered and you must suffer too. Onto our desk floats a sheet of updated Christmas carols from Croydon’s branch of the National Union of Teachers.

One chorus, to the tune of O Christmas Tree (or The Red Flag for you nostalgic Lefties), goes: “No PRP, no PRP It won’t raise any standards No PRP, no PRP That’s what our demand is”, followed by lines like: “It doesn’t work in industry Where now they say no PRP.” Even worse is Hark now hear the teachers sing (”...listen to what we say That PRP will never work We all deserve fair pay”).

There is more, but we can’t bear to go on.
