Anne Freeman attacks John Habgood’s views on religious education and asks (TES, April 7): “Is there, in fact, any evidence that non-religious people behave any worse than religious people?”
We all know that religious folk can be hypocrites, but I think it’s a fair bet that people who take seriously enough to apply to their own lives such rules as: do not steal, do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not envy and so on, would be less likely to behave badly than other folk without such Biblical precepts.
In fact, it could be said that the general failure to observe the 10 Commandments as a sound basis for living, as well as Christ’s command to love one’s neighbour as oneself, has had a lot to do with the moral mess that the country is in.
No doubt I shall be told that bad behaviour is no longer simply definable.
