Applications for an intriguing non-teaching post close today. Tewkesbury school in Gloucestershire (1,750-pupil technology college and beacon school with top results) is looking for a "very strong disciplinarian... with a no-nonsense, strict, authoritarian approach" to supervise students in its independent work room.

This terrifying creature is to control pupils who have been removed from classes they are disrupting and sent to work in the room in silence, explains the head, Aydin Onac. Despite the fearsome wording, he says the approach needed is firm rather than military.
