Record numbers of aspiring teachers will begin training next year, according to the Teacher Training Agency.

More than 41,000 trainee teachers are expected to enter the profession, exceeding last year’s total of 40, 624.

Ralph Tabberer, chief executive of the TTA, said: “There are some pockets of the country where teachers haven’t been able to get jobs, and other areas where we still need to attract people.”

There are still shortages in key subjects. The number of trainee science teachers fell by 1 per cent. In modern languages, numbers decreased by 10 per cent, and 5 per cent of places remained unfilled at the start of this academic year.
