THE LADY ALLEN OF HURTWOOD MEMORIAL TRUST. Applications for awards of up to Pounds 1,000 are invited by January 14 from people working with children - particularly those disadvantaged or disabled - and their families, who wish to travel to enlarge their experience and enhance the quality of their work. MUSIC FOR YOUTH NATIONAL FESTIVAL 1999. Entries are invited by December 14. There are no entry qualifications or fees and there are classes for all styles and all levels - from orchestras to duos, jazz bands to gamelans and choirs to recorder consorts - including a category for composing in the classroom.

Forty-three regional festivals are held followed by the national festival at the Royal Festival Hall, London SE1, on July 5-10. Selected groups appear at the Music for Youth Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall on November 8-10. Details: 0181 870 9624.

SCHOOL CRICKETER OF THE YEAR. All-rounder William Jefferson, captain of the Oundle School team, has been named School Cricketer of the Year by education insurance specialist Holmwoods. He was selected for the English Cricket Board under-18 side and led his team to victory against Oundle’s main rivals, including Uppingham and Oakham, and against Eton and Shrewsbury in the Silk Trophy.

ECO-SCHOOLS AWARD. Canon Burrows Primary and Nursery School in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, has been awarded a Green Flag from the Tidy Britain Group for improving its environment, reducing litter, waste and fuel and water bills, increasing environmental awareness, recycling, and involving the community in projects.
