Failing further education colleges have been given a sharp warning to improve or face Government intervention, as ministers announced a huge cash boost to promote lifelong learning through FE yesterday.

Colleges will receive the money -Pounds 725 million - over the next two years.

Education Secretary David Blunkett told the Association of Colleges annual conference in Harrogate yesterday that the money was a quid pro quo for improved standards, and insisted teaching standards and subject knowledge in the sector must improve.

Mr Blunkett also warned colleges facing financial difficulties or problems with governance, that, like failing schools, they faced Government intervention.
