Peter Lauener, a lifelong learning director at the Department for Education and Skills, is regarded as one of the cleverer civil servants.

But at the ACM conference, he showed that he is not so hot on his arachnology. Explaining the design of one of his charts, he said: “It used to be a spider but we added a seventh leg.”
