The subject of a recent piece of French folio writing in a Glasgow school was “My Home Town”. During the preparation time, one boy asked: “Miss, how would you say pies and Bovril in French? I’m talking about the food at the Old Firm games.”
There isn’t an exact equivalent in French, but he remained determined to find a way round the problem. On handing in his work, he announced. “I did what you always say, and put in as near a version as I could find in the vocabulary book.” And indeed he had.
According to his translation, fans at Celtic-Rangers matches are treated to “crepes et cafe creme” at half-time. It’s good to know that the European dimension is alive in Glasgow schools.
