A teacher who suffered a serious back injury when lifting a box of books has lost her battle for Pounds 500,000 compensation. A High Court judge expressed sympathy with Janet Adamson, 41, of Hawksdown, Walmer, Kent, but cleared Kent County Council of all blame. Mrs Adamson was forced to retire on medical grounds after the incident in May 1990 at Castlemount School in Dover.

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers, which backed Mrs Adamson’s case, said it was considering an appeal and warned that the judgment could jeopardise teachers’ health and safety.
