A thread appeared on Twitter this morning, asking people to recall something a teacher once did that made you angry. Not all teachers are perfect (they’ll be the first to admit this), but the vast majority of them inspire children every single day, and make a hugely positive difference to hundreds of lives.

And clearly, the educational Twittersphere agrees, for it wasn’t long until an alternate thread was created: things that teachers did to make your life better.

So here’s to you, Snezana Velickovic, who changed Cole Moreton‘s life with her love of books, Ms Latty who installed a love of music in Frances Maxwell and all the other teachers who change lives every single day.

There’s a thread going around about naming something teachers did that made you angry. Let’s have some balance. Name something a teacher did that made your life better.

In a way, I owe my entire career, and the love of books that has shepherded me through this messed up world, to teachers trying to keep me safe from a gang of bitchy tweens led by a tiny, truculent mobster named Connie.

One of my teachers who was particularly in tune with me (bit of a misfit, didn’t like rules, was “different”) once said something I think about often.
“You may not feel popular or great right now but when you’re older, these people will be riding waves; you’ll be making them”

Snezana Velickovic changed my life. “Here are books,” she said. “Here is music. Here is another life. You could have it if you want it, you’re good enough.” East End of London in the early Eighties. #forevergrateful #thanksmiss

When I was in year 8 I joked in PE that getting in shape would help us get boyfriends ( I know), my PE teacher took me aside and gave me an amazing pep talk about self-worth. It always stuck with me!

Oh my word ... Mr Meredith was my English teacher and he was awesome. He gave me such a lifelong love of literature, Samuel Beckett, Shakespeare, etc.

Had one amazing teacher. I have dyslexia, have been ignored all through my schooling. Which results for example in my knowledge about grammar being non existing. I met her in higher education when (I believe) the damage was already made. Even thou she was supposed to continue...

What a lovely idea. My music teacher, Ms Latty, was a HUGE inspiration and inspired a life-long love of music in me. She was so encouraging and dedicated all her spare time to running music groups for us, and let us hang out in the music room during breaks. I’m so grateful.
