Bugs on this intranet are set to Glow

Aberdeenshire pupils are to be trained as mentors in a programme to teach their peers about Scotland's national education intranet.

Once the P5 and P6 pupils have been through the Glow Bugs training programme, they will be able to teach other youngsters - and even keep their teachers right.

"Every staff member in Aberdeenshire should have access to Glow and our next step is to get the children into it," explained Anna Rossvoll, ICT project officer with Aberdeenshire Council.

"Glow is the Scottish schools digital network to enable communication, collaboration and the availability of digital content across Scotland. At present, in Aberdeenshire, staff have access, then the children, followed by parents."

The pound;37.5 million Scottish Government initiative will allow parents to be better informed about what their children are learning in school and become more involved.

"The parents will be able to contribute to it as well and share their expertise. Staff will be connected with other staff within their own school, within the authority and across Scotland," she said.

One member of staff in every school has been trained as a Glow mentor and is holding introductory sessions for colleagues.

"Every primary school in Aberdeenshire will have access to the Glow Bugs training programme. The Aberdeenshire Glow scheme will visit as many schools as it can, and schools who are happy to do so, will be given the programme to implement themselves."

A special news station M2C (Mountains to Sea) is being launched on the site, where pupils will be able to contribute news items, photographs and video clips.

Mrs Rossvoll is hoping the Glow Bugs training programme might attract sponsorship from the business community: "They would be investing in the workforce of the future, because we are providing them with the skills you want young children to have in industry in future years."
