While education authorities exclude the disabled by failing to implement glossy equal opportunities policies or enabling disabled teachers to teach, the plight of disabled pupils will not improve.

There needs to be a mammoth culture change of attitude and a re-education programme, so that disabled staff and children are included, even if this requires a change in law. Inclusion often does not need expensive or unreasonable adjustments, for it can be as simple as using an overhead projector, or a minor timetable or class age change.

The mark of a civilised society is the way it treats the disabled. all disabled pupils and teachers want is the right to learn, teach and work like other people.
