TIM Cornford, head of assessment at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, admits in his letter (TES, January 28) that “The 1999 (key stage 2 English) tests were, as always, extensively trialled to ensure that they were equall friendly for all children”.

Thanks Tim! I always suspected that something was behind the ever-upward spiral of results.
