Welsh Secretary John Redwood has announced he will instruct the curriculum authority in the new year to revise the religious syllabus to “signal a real strengthening of the Christian element in religious education in Wales’s schools”.

In an end-of-year statement, Mr Redwood said: “Most of Britain’s people still think of themselves as Christians. This is especially true in Wales, the land of Church and Chapel.”

He said too many children were taught more comparative religion than Christianity and should instead be taught more of their past and more of a need for a modern Christian morality.
