THE bill to taxpayers for promoting the Government’s education and employment policies has doubled since Labour came to power. In answer to another question by Mr Clappison, education minister Michael Wills said that in 1998-99 the Department for Education and Employment spent more than pound;15.5 million n advertising. This compares to just pound;7.5m in 1996-97.

In each of the past two years, more than pound;6m has been spent promoting the New Deal. Almost pound;2m went on encouraging parents to help their children read.
