A young person’s most prized asset - the mobile phone - is to be used in the world of learning.

A three-year, pan-European project, “m-learning”, was launched this week to exploit young people’s use of phones, palm and pocket PCs, gameboys and other portable devices to show that learning is fun.

The project, involving the UK, Sweden, Italy and Belgium, is targeting 16-24-year-olds with problems in literacy and numeracy. Despite their lack of basic skills most of these young people have mobiles.

“We want to exploit the enthusiasm that young people have for mobile phones and introduce them to learning in a way that fits their lifestyles,” said Jill Attewell, research manager at the Learning and Skills Development Agency, which is co-ordinating the project.
