Clay: Pupils - in groups of six - could create an alternative set of chess pieces, each pupil taking responsibility for one piece. Groups choose a theme, which could be different animals, surrealfantasy figures, etc. (Refer to “funk art” ceramic figures of Robert Arneson.) Using clay, show pupils how to build a base, from slabs, on which their pieces will be built.
3-D: Use Mervyn Peake illustrations from Alice Through The Looking Glass, as a basis for making hats, based on chess pieces.
2-D: Talk to pupils about the stress generated by chess games. Make self-portrait studies in sketchbooks, showing expressions of concentration, or stress. Pupils produce a personal study about exam stress and pressures.
