There are 10 tracks on Art Songs, a CD that celebrates the work of some artists exhibited at the Tate. The songs, though competent, are probably more useful for their factual content than memorable for their musical or literary genius. There are, however, places where the sound and the sense make an intriguing match - the Mexican flavour of the Frida Kahlo number is an example. Elsewhere we learn about Blake (“became a cult figure for a later generation”), Pollock (“splish, splash, splatter, spill, dribble, drip, drip”), Turner, Millais, Rodin, Kandinsky and the Cubists.

Art Songs costs pound;9.99 from the Tate shop.
