UNITED STATES: Georgia last week became the first American state to force schools to offer the option of bible classes.

All secondary students will be able to choose courses on the “history and literature” of the old and new testaments, from 2007-08. The Bible itself will be the textbook for the course.

To date bible classes have only been offered in scattered rural schools across America. Proponents say biblical literacy is necessary to understand Western civilisation. Opponents say it is another ploy by Conservative Christians to impose their beliefs on schools.

Frances Paterson, associate professor of education leadership at Valdosta state university, said the legislation could face legal challenges for violating America’s ban on religious advocacy in schools.
