PARENTS who abduct their daughters to force them into arranged marriages could face new criminal charges, according to Home Office minister, Mike O’Brien.
His remarks came after A Right to Choice, a Home Office report on forced marriages, was criticised by leading Muslim campaigners. They argued that the report, which says tat the practice should be treated as domestic violence or child abuse, fails to tackle the problem and could even put victims at risk.
The report follows reports of girls tricked into going to the Indian sub-continent to be forced into marriages. There are no official figures on the number of young women affected.
